Birth Doula
A doula (pronounced 'doola') helps provide safety, security and informational support during labour and birth. The word is ancient greek in origin and literally translated means 'caregiver, or woman servant'.
'The best decision I made for the birth of my second baby was to ask Sarah to be my doula. I would never have acheived the confidence and level of mental and physical preparation without her. Her dedication, helpful suggestions, contacts and warm personality made my whole birth experience a very confident and happy one. In preparation for the birth, her support and willingness to listen to my fears and expectations were invaluable; her calm practicality and gentle encouragement during the birth made it not only bearable but very empowering for me; her complete selflessness and care after the birth was beyond what anyone would expect. I would wholeheartedly recommend Sarah to anyone looking for a confident and happy birth experience. Thank you Sarah!' from Charlotte 2011
A doula does not replace the midwife, perform examinations, or administer drugs or medical advice. A doula believes you need to be taken care of, or 'mothered', during labour and delivery, and also in your early days as a new mum. See the postnatal doula page for information on the help and support a doula offers in the home.
The services offered are flexible and tailored to the needs of you and your birth partner. Every birth is unique and therefore the type and amount of support needed varies each time. A doula is there to empower you, providing relevant information and supporting your choices through labour and delivery. This enables a more satisfying birth with the feeling of being in control throughout the delivery.
Research Shows that having a doula can:
- Reduce labour in first births by 25%
- Decrease caesarean sections by 50%
- Decrease the need for forceps delivery by 40%
- Decrease the need for pain medication
- Increase success in breastfeeding
- Alleviate depression and anxiety
All our Doulas are CRB checked and carry up-to-date insurance.
